Qatar Airways is set to resume direct flights between Malta and Qatar, starting in July, with four weekly flights between the two countries. This significant development was announced by Malta's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Ian Borg, during his visit to Doha.

The direct flights will be operated using an Airbus A320, connecting Malta with Hamad International Airport in Doha, a hub that services 197 destinations across five continents. The flight schedule is as follows:

Wednesdays and Fridays:
Doha to Malta: Departure 2:05am – Arrival 6:45am
Malta to Doha: Departure 10:15am – Arrival 4:20pm

Mondays and Saturdays:
Doha to Malta: Departure 8:45am – Arrival 1:25pm
Malta to Doha: Departure 5:05pm – Arrival 11:10pm

During his visit to Doha, Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg held high-level discussions with key Qatari officials, including Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulraham Al-Thani, Ing. Badr Mohammed Al Meer, CEO of Qatar Airways, and Saad bin Ali Al Kharji, Chairman of Qatar Tourism. These discussions focused on strategic investments and collaborations in sectors such as financial services, tourism, and renewable energy.

Borg emphasized the importance of air connectivity in advancing trade, tourism, educational exchange, and innovation. He highlighted that these flights will not only contribute to the economies of both nations but also strengthen cultural and social ties. The new direct connections will enhance Malta’s links with various regions, including Australia, which hosts the largest Maltese diaspora, and other emerging tourism markets.

The talks in Doha also served to build upon previous exchanges, including Borg’s visit to Qatar in December 2022. These efforts underscore the robust relationship between Malta and Qatar, especially as the two countries approach the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on June 18, 2025.

During his visit, Borg extended an invitation to Qatari investors to consider Malta as a gateway to European markets and a hub for sustainable innovation. He also visited the Embassy of Malta in Qatar, where he met with Ambassador Simon Pullicino and other officials. The embassy is nearing the completion of a project aimed at improving its facilities and consular services for the growing Maltese community in Qatar.

Accompanying Borg on his visit were Carlo Micallef, CEO of the Malta Tourism Authority, and Alan Borg, CEO of Malta International Airport. The resumption of these flights is expected to significantly enhance Malta's international connectivity and foster further collaboration between the two nations.
