![]() Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh to visit MaltaSeptember 02 2024 06:30 by PCLMedia This visit is especially significant because it comes six decades after Malta’s independence from British rule on September 21, 1964. The government said in a tweet Prince Edward and his wife Sophie will be in Malta between October 7 and 10. Malta this year marks 60 years of becoming a sovereign nation-state. The event marked the end of 164 years of British colonial rule, during which Malta played an important role, particularly during World War II, when it served as the Allies’ strategic naval base. Malta’s transition to independence was gradual, beginning with self-government in the 1947 and culminating in complete independence in 1964. Despite gaining independence, Malta chose to remain in the Commonwealth, reflecting its continued ties to the United Kingdom. The Duke of Edinburgh, Edward, is King Charles’s youngest brother. He married Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones in 1999. They were conferred the titles of Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh in March last year by King Charles. The announcement of their visit was made in a joint communication on X, formerly Twitter, by the Maltese government and the British High Commission in Malta. Ten years ago, Prince Edward's nephew William had made the trip to the island to mark the 50th anniversary. Prince William had attended Independence Day events in Malta in 2014 instead of his wife Catherine, who was at the time suffering from the effects of hyperemesis gravidarum. ![]() Contact IMEX Malta ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
