International Students in Malta Can Reclaim the Bulk of Fees Through Tax Rebates

Malta is becoming a popular study destination for international students, partly due to a scheme that allows them to reclaim most of their tuition fees once they start working in the country.
Despite its small size and population of around 500,000, Malta offers several higher and further education institutes. Among these, the Global Banking School (GBS) Malta is set to see its first cohort of Masters students graduate in September.
Raj Kapoor, head of international student recruitment at GBS, highlights the country's significant advantages for students seeking affordable qualifications.
The tuition fee for an undergraduate degree at GBS Malta is €6,000 per year, considerably lower than the fees for international students in more popular destinations like the UK, Canada, the US, and Australia.
A national scheme makes studying in Malta even more cost-effective for international students. The Post Study Work Visa offered to graduates who remain in Malta allows them to claim back up to 70% of their tuition fees, with a rebate cap of €12,500, provided they secure a job within nine months of completing their full-time university course.
"Not only does it cost just €18,000 to earn your bachelor’s degree at GBS Malta, but if you stay in Malta – which the country encourages after graduation – and start working, you will pay income tax. You get 70% of your tuition back through tax credit," explained Kapoor.
He added that earning a degree significantly impacts students’ lives, with many at GBS Malta actively seeking to improve their situations through education and better job opportunities.
Recent data from Malta’s English language school association indicates that the country is becoming an increasingly popular destination for international students, particularly from Latin America.
Statistics from FELTOM’s members show that student numbers in 2023 surged by over 20,000 compared to the previous year, just 5,000 short of 2019’s record of 83,610 students.
Students from India are increasingly considering destinations beyond the traditional big four (the UK, Canada, the US, and Australia), as countries like Australia and Canada face restrictive immigration policies. This shift is making Malta and other European countries more attractive to Indian students.
