Malta Celebrates Santa Marija With Festive Traditions

August 15 2024 14:47 by PCLMedia

Today, Malta and Gozo are awash with celebrations for Santa Marija, honoring the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This day, falling on August 15th, holds profound significance in the Catholic faith and resonates deeply with the Maltese people, blending elements of religious reverence, historical reflection, and vibrant cultural festivities.

Across the islands, eight parishes are draped in festive decor to commemorate Our Lady’s ascent into heaven. Celebrations are particularly lively in Mqabba, Qrendi, Għaxaq, Gudja, Attard, Mosta, and Birkirkara in Malta, and in Victoria (Rabat) in Gozo. The celebrations will continue next Sunday in Dingli and Mġarr in Malta, and Żebbuġ in Gozo.

The day started with solemn Masses in beautifully adorned churches, where locals and visitors alike gather to honor Mary’s grace and her role as a model for Christian living. The highlight of the day is the grand processions featuring intricately decorated statues of the Virgin Mary, paraded through the streets to the accompaniment of band marches and church bells.

In Mġarr, a cherished tradition sees the highest bidder earn the privilege of carrying the statue during the procession. This tradition not only adds a unique touch to the festivities but also supports charitable causes managed by the Church.

Beyond its religious significance, Santa Marija is a poignant reminder of Malta’s resilience during World War II. On this day in 1942, the Santa Marija Convoy, also known as Operation Pedestal, successfully delivered crucial supplies to Malta’s Grand Harbour. The arrival of the damaged tanker “Ohio” is celebrated as a miraculous event that played a critical role in Malta's survival during the siege.

As the sun sets, Malta's skies are illuminated with spectacular fireworks displays. Għaxaq is renowned for its record-breaking synchronised aerial fireworks, while Mqabba delights with its “Tower of Light” show. Qrendi celebrates two decades of its “Conquest of Darkness” pyrotechnic extravaganza.

Santa Marija is also a time for charity, exemplified by the annual pilgrimage from Dingli to Mġarr, now in its seventh year, which raises funds for Puttinu Cares, a foundation supporting children with cancer.
