August 13 2024 08:47 by PCLMedia

The Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival returns for its 19th edition, poised to be a dynamic celebration of literary arts, cultural exchange, and artistic collaboration.

Hosted by Inizjamed, this year’s festival will unfold from Wednesday, August 28th to Saturday, August 31st, at two iconic locations: the Valletta Design Cluster in Valletta and the MCAST Campus in Paola.

The festival will spotlight seven acclaimed authors from five different countries, complemented by a series of events that explore the synergy between literature, music, and translation.

This year’s featured authors include Malika Booker, a British poet with Guyanese and Grenadian roots; Italian novelist Irene Chias, who now calls Malta home; Maltese writers David Aloisio and Mario Cardona; Raymond Antrobus from the United Kingdom; Josep Pedrals from Catalonia; and Maja Ručević from Croatia. Readings will primarily be in Maltese and English, with select pieces delivered in their original languages.

The festival began on Friday, August 2nd, with a special reading for the elderly at St Vincent De Paule, led by Priscilla Cassar. The event featured Mario Cardona's poetry, accompanied by musicians Carol Ciantar and Beatriz Tomás.

Workshops for children were held on Tuesday, August 8th, and Wednesday, August 9th, in Attard and Qormi, led by David Aloisio.

The main events kick off on Wednesday, August 28th, with a masterclass by Malika Booker at 4 PM at the Valletta Design Cluster. This session offers aspiring writers a unique opportunity to learn from one of contemporary poetry’s most influential voices. That evening, a multilingual Open Mic event will also take place at the Valletta Design Cluster.

On Thursday, August 29th, starting at 7:30 PM, a free event will feature readings by the guest authors and other special guests, showcasing a wide array of literary expressions.

Friday, August 30th, begins at 7 PM with an event featuring Claudio Berochia, an interdisciplinary artist from Italy, co-organized with Spazju Kreattiv. This will be followed by the main festival event at 8 PM, featuring readings by Mario Cardona, Irene Chias, Josep Pedrals, and Maja Ručević, with musical performances by The Hinge Project. Tickets for this event are available on ShowsHappening.com.

The festival concludes on Saturday, August 31st, with readings by David Aloisio, Malika Booker, and Raymond Antrobus, again accompanied by performances by The Hinge Project. This final evening promises to be a fitting end to a festival that celebrates the power of words and music. Tickets can be purchased on ShowsHappening.com.

Throughout the week, the participating authors will engage in a Literary Translation Workshop led by Nadia Mifsud and Keith Borg.

This workshop, a cornerstone of the festival, fosters cross-cultural dialogue and makes diverse literary works more accessible. Translations produced during the workshop will be showcased during the Friday and Saturday evening events, offering audiences a unique insight into the art of literary translation.

The 2024 Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival is made possible with support from Arts Council Malta, MCAST, APS, and Versopolis. The festival also receives backing from Għaqda tal-Malti – Università, the Valletta Cultural Agency, Valletta Design Cluster, and Ulysses’ Shelter 3, co-financed by the European Union.

The festival’s visual identity and promotional materials, designed by artist Naomi Gatt, add a distinctive artistic touch to the event.

For those eager to immerse themselves in a celebration of Mediterranean literature and culture, the Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival 2024 promises an exceptional experience. Most events are free, with tickets for the final nights available for purchase online.
