Mel Gibson Working on a Limited TV Series about the Great Siege of Malta

Mel Gibson has confirmed he is working on a limited television series that will focus on the dramatic and historic events of the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The actor and director, best known for his work on films such as Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ, spoke about the project during an interview with Movieweb.com.

Gibson visited Malta earlier this month, where he met with Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela to discuss potential filming opportunities. It was during this visit that he shared details about the new series, which will depict the epic battle in which 700 knights of the Order of St. John, stationed on the island, defended Malta against a massive Ottoman force. Led by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the Ottomans launched an assault with 40,000 men and numerous ships, but ultimately, the knights' strategic defense resulted in their improbable victory.

The project highlights the pivotal historical moment that shaped European history. “It’s an incredible story, and there’s only one place to film that, I mean, in Malta,” Gibson said. "Because that’s where it happened, at these fortresses where the battle took place."

While Gibson expressed his passion for the project, he remained uncertain whether he would take on an acting role. “I’d like to be in it, but I don’t know if I’ll have the time, you know?” he said. "But I certainly want to be a producer of it. I’ve worked with a very talented writer on the script, so it’s going to be good for somebody. I know that it’s a great story."

Gibson's experience in historical dramas, such as Braveheart (1995), where he played William Wallace and directed the film to win five Academy Awards, makes him a strong candidate to helm a project like this. His directorial eye for grand historical settings and intricate battle sequences would suit the sweeping narrative of the Great Siege of Malta.

Currently, Gibson is busy working on the sequel to his 2004 religious epic The Passion of the Christ. Titled Resurrection, the film is set to reunite much of the original cast, including Jim Caviezel and Francesco De Vito, and will be shot in various locations including Israel, Morocco, and Italy. However, despite his packed schedule, Gibson's enthusiasm for the Malta series suggests he is heavily invested in seeing the project come to life, even if he may not be in front of the camera.

Gibson's career has been marked by his deep interest in significant historical and religious events, making him a natural fit for a series about the Great Siege. Over the years, he has taken on a wide variety of roles, both as an actor and a director. In addition to his work on Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ, he directed Apocalypto (2006), a film set in the final days of the Mayan civilization. His commitment to detailed historical storytelling has earned him a unique position in Hollywood, and fans of his work can expect a gripping and accurate portrayal of Malta's pivotal battle.

Gibson’s ability to bring historical events to the screen in a way that resonates with modern audiences suggests that the Siege of Malta series will be no different. The project will likely blend thrilling battle scenes with deep human drama, capturing the tension, bravery, and sacrifice that marked the Great Siege.

Given the magnitude of the story and the grand scale of the conflict, this series promises to be one of Gibson's most ambitious television projects to date.
