Reflecting on 50 Years as a Republic - Maltas Journey from Independence to a Bright Future

President Myriam Spiteri Debono highlighted the importance of reflection and preparation for Malta’s future as the nation celebrated the 50th anniversary of becoming a Republic. Speaking during Friday’s commemoration in St. George’s Square, Valletta, she called on citizens to honor Malta’s historical milestones while addressing modern challenges and opportunities.

The event, themed "Our Story" (L-Istorja Ahna), featured an audiovisual spectacle projected onto the façade of the President’s Palace. This artistic presentation narrated Malta's history, culminating in the establishment of the Republic on December 13, 1974.

From Independence to Republic

Malta’s journey to sovereignty began with independence from British rule on September 21, 1964, following centuries of colonization. Independence granted Malta the ability to govern itself and paved the way for significant political, economic, and social reforms. Yet, it was on December 13, 1974, that Malta formally became a Republic, severing its remaining ties to the British Crown and asserting itself as a nation led by a Maltese Head of State.

This transformation marked a turning point, reshaping Malta’s identity as a modern democratic state while preserving its rich cultural heritage. Since then, the country has navigated its place on the global stage, joining the European Union in 2004 and adopting the euro in 2008.

Reflections from Leadership

During the ceremony, President Spiteri Debono emphasized the sacrifices made by past generations and the need to address pressing contemporary issues, including social exclusion, environmental challenges, and population growth. She urged Maltese citizens to view the Republic's anniversary as an opportunity for unity and resilience.

“The 50th anniversary should serve as an opportunity to honor those who came before us and the sacrifices they made to bring us to where we are today. It should also allow us to reflect on where we stand now and what we are prepared to do for those who come after us,” she said.

Spiteri Debono underscored the importance of collective effort in addressing societal challenges, including material deprivation, air pollution, and the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. She encouraged citizens to use Malta’s resources wisely, aiming to make an impact on both a local and global level.

Prime Minister Robert Abela echoed these sentiments, describing the Republic as the foundation of Malta’s modern identity. He paid tribute to those who fought for sovereignty and underscored the importance of preserving Malta’s language and cultural legacy for future generations.

"No people can forget where they came from. A sense of identity must also reach the generations to come," Abela said.

He called for further democratic reforms, economic resilience, and advancements in green energy and digital transformation. "It is only through unity, hard work, and identity that we can take the Republic forward into the next fifty years,” he added.

Minister Owen Bonnici also reflected on the strength and determination of the Maltese and Gozitan people in shaping their nation. “This is a moment not only to celebrate what we have achieved but also to reflect on how we can continue building on this extraordinary historical heritage,” he said.

A Vision for the Future

The commemorative event, organized by Festivals Malta and the National Celebrations Foundation, brought together more than 400 individuals in an artistic production showcasing the vibrancy of Maltese culture. It celebrated Malta’s achievements while reaffirming its aspirations for the future.

President Spiteri Debono concluded with a call to action: “Each one of us must raise and uphold the name of our Malta.” This sentiment was echoed by leaders across the spectrum, envisioning a Malta that is prosperous, sustainable, and united as it embarks on the next chapter of its history.
