Tourist Arrivals to Malta Rise by 18.5% in July 2024

The number of tourists visiting Malta in July 2024 reached 385,591, marking an 18.5% increase compared to July 2023, according to data released by the National Statistics Office on Thursday.

Out of the total visitors in July, 361,628 tourists traveled to Malta for holiday purposes, while 10,100 came for business. The largest group of visitors were aged between 0 and 24 years (39.9%), followed by those in the 25-44 age group (33.0%). Italian, British, and French residents accounted for 48.5% of all incoming tourists.

Total nights spent by tourists rose by 9.8% compared to July 2023, reaching nearly 2.8 million. The majority of these nights (89.2%) were spent in rented accommodations. On average, tourists stayed 7.2 nights.

Tourist spending totaled approximately €403.9 million in July, reflecting a 20.7% increase compared to the same month in 2023. The average expenditure per night was €145.2.

A total of 257,754 tourists visited Gozo and Comino in July, representing 66.8% of all tourists, including both day-trippers and overnight visitors.

From January to July 2024, inbound tourists totaled 1,976,457, an increase of 22.4% compared to the same period in 2023. The total number of nights spent by tourists increased by 14.3%, surpassing 12.2 million. Tourist expenditure for the first seven months of 2024 was estimated at €1.7 billion, 23.6% higher than the same period in 2023. Per capita spending also rose to €858, up from €849 in 2023.

The number of tourists visiting Gozo and Comino during this period reached 1,109,844, accounting for 56.2% of all tourists.

August was also a record-breaking month for the Malta International Airport, with nearly a million passengers passing through. The airport handled 983,182 passengers, an increase of nearly 12% over August 2023, making it the busiest August in its history. Aircraft movements in August exceeded 6,100, reflecting a 14.3% rise. Italy remained the most significant market, with Rome's Fiumicino Airport being the busiest route.

In total, over six million passengers passed through Malta International Airport between January and August 2024, marking a 16.3% improvement compared to the same period last year.
